Well, with most host sites it’s really just the marquee events at the site and the rest are spread out over the surrounding area. I think Atlanta had some in other STATES. (Houston would have been one of the most compact Games in decades and we still would have been putting prelims of the tournament-style events as far away as Dallas, Austin and San Antonio.) New York did put up a realistic bid for 2012 that they had space for. But I think the point here was less “NYC for the olympics 5eva” and more “god, LA, give someone else a chance would ya?”

Hell, the football events took place in Scotland and Wales in 2012, in addition to London. The sailing events couldn’t be held there, because London’s not on a coast. The shotput event in Athens was hosted in Olympia. Football events in Sydney were in Canberra and Adelaide and other places. Not always do Olympic host cities actually play host to each event.

The Greater London area (607 square miles) is bigger than New York City (468 miles), but Atlanta is at most 135 square miles, and Barcelona ~340.

As for “having Long Island host the Olympics”…the events would have been spread out among the boroughs, two of which are on Long Island.

Before the USOC can submit a bid proposal to the IOC, it has to decide on an actual city to host. This depends on costs, infrastructure, etc etc…and the city’s interest in actually hosting the things. The mayor of Boston, for example, doesn’t think it would be such a good idea to spend that much money on a bid at this time (the bidding process racks up costs in the billions, and it could be all for nothing if you don’t get the games). Meanwhile officials in Tulsa want to use the occasion to put their city on the map, even as they acknowledge it’s a small chance.

They sent out a letter to 35 moderate-to-large cities which might be interested (Phoenix, Seattle, L.A., New York, etc). After NY’s failed 2012 bid and Chicago’s failed 2016 bid, the USOC didn’t submit a bid for 2020, even though the IOC said it would have liked to receive one and hopes for a future bid from the USOC.

The deadlines for bid applications are due in late 2014 (and the final decision is made in 2017), so the USOC is feeling out which cities would be amenable to hosting. All very early stuff right now.

When I heard the U.S. Olympic Committee wrote us asking about putting in a bid to host the 2024 Summer Games
